Alberto Costa, Joao Mario, now this guy. All the same profile. Defensively weak. Are there no solid actual right-backs out there? Even Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is the best version of these types of players was too much of a defensive liability at Liverpool to be a sure thing at right-back - they kept trying him in midfield. Cancelo and Spinazola couldn't hold their place at Juve either. Cambiaso's defensive frailties are causing us problems now. These types of players don't work at Juve.
that's a good point overall, but teams that defend high don't really need - and can't really use - classic defensive fullbacks. and historically some of the best fullbacks weren't especially great defenders. look at dani alves, he was more of a winger than anything else. same for cafu and i'd take him over anyone else if he was still in his ~prime
look at liverpool's attacking numbers after trent left... salah shits the bed without support from him. slot even tried szoboszlai in his position. a central player and an attacking midfielder at that lol
spina left because paratici was a lunatic and thought it was a good idea to trade him for the one and only *checks notes* luca pellegrini. i think that spalletti and spina would make a very good match, i'd still take spina back, no questions asked
some of the most valuable fullbacks (hakimi, trent, balde, davies, even dimarco who's not a classic fullback) are better attacking players than defenders. this is what makes them stand out
and this isn't about mingueza. i haven't seen him lately and at barcelona he was pretty average, i'm not a fan of this signing. i'm just saying that modern fullbacks don't necessarily have to be excellent defenders. i wish mingueza was at hakimi's level and we had to deal with some occasional defensive blunders between all those successful overlaps with yildiz lol
