Is that the highlights of his career? Never seen him and from the looks his youtube clip he makes Joao Mario's youtube look like the latter is the first name that Spalletti puts down on the sheet.

not that I watched the clip but I've seen enough of him from his days at Barca and the odd Celta game this season (notably the Europa game vs Bologna) to know that he has literally no defensive awareness and it would be fair to assume he is of a similar mould to Joao Mario. Frankly Mingueza is a disaster defensively.

If he's deployed as a wide midfielder I'd feel more comfortable, even if I think based on current form, McKennie is the starter there. but if we intend on signing Mingueza as a starting RB in a back 4... I'd be very worried.

Alberto Costa, Joao Mario, now this guy. All the same profile. Defensively weak. Are there no solid actual right-backs out there? Even Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is the best version of these types of players was too much of a defensive liability at Liverpool to be a sure thing at right-back - they kept trying him in midfield. Cancelo and Spinazola couldn't hold their place at Juve either. Cambiaso's defensive frailties are causing us problems now. These types of players don't work at Juve.

that's a good point overall, but teams that defend high don't really need - and can't really use - classic defensive fullbacks. and historically some of the best fullbacks weren't especially great defenders. look at dani alves, he was more of a winger than anything else. same for cafu and i'd take him over anyone else if he was still in his ~prime

look at liverpool's attacking numbers after trent left... salah shits the bed without support from him. slot even tried szoboszlai in his position. a central player and an attacking midfielder at that lol

spina left because paratici was a lunatic and thought it was a good idea to trade him for the one and only *checks notes* luca pellegrini. i think that spalletti and spina would make a very good match, i'd still take spina back, no questions asked

some of the most valuable fullbacks (hakimi, trent, balde, davies, even dimarco who's not a classic fullback) are better attacking players than defenders. this is what makes them stand out

and this isn't about mingueza. i haven't seen him lately and at barcelona he was pretty average, i'm not a fan of this signing. i'm just saying that modern fullbacks don't necessarily have to be excellent defenders. i wish mingueza was at hakimi's level and we had to deal with some occasional defensive blunders between all those successful overlaps with yildiz lol

You're probably right. It'd be amazing to have a RB at the technical leval of Dani Alves, Cafu, Hakimi etc. But they were all robust enough to at least block a cross, which many modern full-backs aren't. Ideally, I'd want a RB that wants to protect the channel, doesn't get beaten 1v1 easily, blocks crosses but makes those runs and can cross themselves. Lichtsteiner did all those things well. He wasn't very technical but he crossed well enough and made enough dangerous runs in behind to hold defences' attention. Dumfries has that kind of balance as well, though he's technically better.

Lol you’re wanting a Lichtsteiner? He was mediocre at best. Team is playing more expansive football than ever and you want Lichtsteiner?!!!
