Looking at his intercepted passes and tackles stat then he seems pretty decent at defensive work.
Of course, he has good defensive skills. But it seems he's not the type to sit in front the defence and clean up, rather chase down balls (some compared him to Davids). He will get further forward than Pirlo and join in the attack leaving the midfield protected by who?

Funny that Melo made less fouls per game than Aquilani and yet that's the reason why so many people dislike him.
