We should sell Buffon and play Chimenti cause every once in 20 games a penalty will be decisive with us, and we wouldn't want to have a keeper who sucks at penalties, sell him to whoever gives us the most money so we can raise Chimenti's pay!!!!

I still don't understand what can someone like in Chimenti.

I mean, I respect him simply because he's in our squad and looks like a nice guy, but to have the man as your fav player is more than fishy.

His penalty-saving skills are comparatively poorer compared to the high stds he have set for himself in his repertoire of skills like shot-stopping, reflexes and dealing with crosses. Most of all, he instills confidence on the back 4 ...

Serie A is unlike J-league many yrs back where no league games should end in a draw, penalties will decide the victors ...

Hang on, someone explain to me why Buffon's performance in the 2003 CL Final is cited as proof that Buffon isn't good at saving penalties?

He saved 2, which is usually enough to win a shootout. It's just that our PK takers were so horrible and Dida came out on top, saving 3.

Or am I missing something?

In any case, I think it's stupid to say that a goalkeeper is 'bad' at saving penalties, because 95% of the battle is guessing the right direction. Now one could argue that Buffon lacks in the 'mental battle' department, but they'd have to provide some cold hard stats to back that claim up.

Precisely.

But what you're missing is that his side lost a match that came down to a penalty shootout, which immediately labeled him as inferior at penalty saving. :rolleyes2

It's not fair and it's wholly uncalled for, but that's honestly what I think has happened to him.

I think the reference is on the world cup shoot out with France where Buffon had dived in the wrong direction (Correct me if Im wrong)

He may be just unlucky in always guessing the wrong direction, losing in these kind of mind games ...

If critics have to pick on Buffon (as nobody's perfect), its this slight chink in his otherwise almost perfect Armour ...

How harsh can you be? Buffon isn't bad at saving penalties, he's just not as good at them as he is at other aspects of goalkeeping.

Besides, he has saved a few in his time.

he isnt the best no but he isnt bad at penalties, he is an amazing keeper. it amazes me how some can say its a flaw. but to look at it as a flaw is silly as penalties taking can be just as much luck as it is skill.

Something about pens i would like to point out. Buffon always stands on the line like its supposed to be, but many gk-s dont. Dida didnt in 2003, same with Dudek in 2005, also i remember Kahn coming out when bayern-valencia went to pens.

Refs dont do anything about it, in big matches, i only recall seeing some small cup competitions where they ask to take again. IMO its a major issue.
