In any case, I think it's stupid to say that a goalkeeper is 'bad' at saving penalties, because 95% of the battle is guessing the right direction. Now one could argue that Buffon lacks in the 'mental battle' department, but they'd have to provide some cold hard stats to back that claim up.

But what you're missing is that his side lost a match that came down to a penalty shootout, which immediately labeled him as inferior at penalty saving. :rolleyes2

It's not fair and it's wholly uncalled for, but that's honestly what I think has happened to him.

He may be just unlucky in always guessing the wrong direction, losing in these kind of mind games ...

If critics have to pick on Buffon (as nobody's perfect), its this slight chink in his otherwise almost perfect Armour ...

he isnt the best no but he isnt bad at penalties, he is an amazing keeper. it amazes me how some can say its a flaw. but to look at it as a flaw is silly as penalties taking can be just as much luck as it is skill.

Something about pens i would like to point out. Buffon always stands on the line like its supposed to be, but many gk-s dont. Dida didnt in 2003, same with Dudek in 2005, also i remember Kahn coming out when bayern-valencia went to pens.

Refs dont do anything about it, in big matches, i only recall seeing some small cup competitions where they ask to take again. IMO its a major issue.
