Thread to discuss "The good old days" of football beyond the Juventus players in History/Legends - whenever you think those good old days were.

- - - Updated - - -

Saw this graphic.

This was a far lower level generation of footballers than any since at least I guess the 50s or earlier. Countries which usually produced national squads full of high level players simply did not.

Netherlands, Italy, Brazil and others completely shat the bed. Wee countries are always going to produce the odd star like Bale from Wales for example but the level across the board tanked.

Spain had a historically great generation. The Balkans stepped up but football changed for the worse when the nations who preach Catenaccio and attacking 343/total football fucked it.

So many nobodies on this list and there were even more.

Salvatore Foti, Giovinco and Prudnikov (@Alex-444 ) were supposed to be the tits.

I used to always buy WS magazine. Their lists were mostly shit though, they'd make 50 players and then include wonderkids from New Zealand, China or Yemen.
Thing is though you'd probably have thought the same about a Welsh player.

I do think it's inevitable that China emerges as a global football powerhouse. Sooner or later it'll happen

Won the U17 as joint top scorer with Bojan. FM08 superkid.

Given he was never that good in real life I consider him my favourite video game character ever.

So I realise I started a thread on Ye Goode Olde Days and then started complaining lol.

Before my era of course but here's Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic playing vs Real Madrid in 1967 at Di Stéfano's testimonial. As Celtic were European champions they were invited to the Bernabeau where Jinky put on a display that got him a standing ovation (i suppose they were all standing anyway though lol) and had the Madridistas shouting olé for each Madrid player he dribbled past. It wasn't exactly a friendly, there were two red cards lol. Despite everybody taking the game seriously and it being an event to celebrate Madrid's greatest player Jinky was able to take the absolute piss and rip Madrid to shreds.

The greatest winger of his generation. Decades ahead of his time. Speed, technique and passing ability.

Not Gareth Bale, who was exceptional. WS would usually pick someone from Cefn Druids or TNS and put him alongside young Benzema.

People been saying that about China for decades, they are as shit as they have ever been. Grassroots game and coaching is terrible. Parents don't care about football. They'd rather have 5 million table tennis players than 25 good football players.

Look at their NT, I can't think of one Chinese player who plays outside of China. Compare it to Japan, who must have 100 players who play in Europe now, some of whom are leading players for teams in top leagues. Chalk and cheese in terms of how they develop players.

Just facts. China have qualified for the World Cup once in history, and lost all 3 group games. They've never won the Asian Cup. They should, in theory, be an Asian powerhouse, but they are basically Thailand.

Couldn’t really find an appropriate thread but it’s been on my mind.

I reminisce about some of the players that are well retired now, and as some of the names that come up the likes: Essien, Diouf, Yaya Toure, Okocha, Eto’o, Drogba, Kanu, Lauren, Geremi, Mikel Obi, Eboue, Kalou, Ameobi, etc.

Which brought me to this, was this the golden era for African Football? Or have I just got that old and just holding onto the aforementioned names as a sentimental value?

Feel like the current world of Football doesn’t have the same quality of African players as they once did.

Those are all sub-Saharan Africans. North Africa has more of the current real stars - Salah, Hakimi, Mahrez.

    Ameobi was mediocre.

You have Osimhen, Lookman and some others for Nigeria. From this era also Sadio Mane, Aubameyang, and Koulibaly, who I'd argue is a better defender than anyone from that era.

I agree though that Drogba, Yaya, Eto'o was peak African player era. Best individual could arguably be Salah or Weah.

    Edit: I'll move these posts.
