The dude is making a gazillion dollars playing in a league that no one cares about while adding to his all time goal total (something that is obviously very important to him).

What he and Messi are doing is fine at this point. Let them enjoy their early retirement in peace.

Now, their roles and how they perform in the World Cup is a different story. If they both expect to be a main player and put in shit performances, they (and the coach) deserve the criticism they get. Something is actually on the line there.

Messi is still decent to be fair, he can be a good playmaker for Argentina even now. Ronaldo just holds Portugal back, he's absolutely washed.

Messi walks the entire game in the MLS, outside of the times he gets the ball and is attacking.

He may be able to put together a solid tournament for Argentina, but in general, he just gives as little effort as possible

Messi has been doing that for years.

My point is he can still have positive contributions and control games, Ronaldo is a super sub at best because he can’t dictate the game and still appears to rely on his physical “assets”.
