No way he's a mid keeper, we could do a lot worse, spending a lot more. Martinez is a very decent keeper and one of the best in the league still, but he provides leadership which we sorely lack.

He’s having a not so stellar WC, is he. Argentina have conceded almost every game and despite him not having outright howlers, it’s clear he isnt commanding the defense the same way anymore.

An upgrade over Di Greg for sure, but hardly someone who inspires incredible confidence currently

The only reason to sign him is to plug the enormous deficiency we have of players who have won anything let alone a major trophy. On that angle I'm all for it, but would rather we have that experience matched by the personality of a leader and mentor. I don't want him encouraging our young players to become twats. Remember the stories of Gattusso and Ambrosini lamenting the influence of Robinho and Ronaldinho on young players- encouraging them to party etc rather than work on their football? I don't want that.

Also he'll ask Di Maria what it's like playing for us and the answer will be that we're utter pushovers. You can put in less than 50%, pretend you're injured, get yourself sent off etc etc and they'll still think the sun shines oot yer bum.
