@Mark can you create an MLS 2026 thread?

Thanks Mark.

Going to be another long season for DC United. At least the Canuck Markovic seems promising. Just saw him interviewed on the local news.

Watch out for Louis Munteanu too, until recently was widely regarded as the ST talent with the highest potential in romanian football since like forever, still only 23yo too, i personally rate him quite highly but i think mentality wise he can be a huge question mark too… now just depends if he joined MLS just for the big paycheck or maybe to also use it as a more internationally visible platform to promote himself in.(locally got some criticism for not moving to one of the better european leagues where he also had offers from but truth is he was pushed to MLS by his previous club which has financial problems and forced his move to the highest bidder)

USA need a unified whole nation league as the top division at least if they dont want promotion relegation, but with promotion relegation in 20 years this country will product top national team

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indonesian_football_league_system
This is my country football pyramid, our country basically enormous in size almost the same like USA
Our top division 18 clubs 3 relegation (no groups)
2nd division 20 clubs 3 promotion 3 relegation (2 groups , 10 each) > like MLS > part top MLS (10+10)as new whole nation league and low MLS as 2nd division
3rd division 24 clubs 3 promotion 6 relegation (4 groups , 6 each) > can be from USL, top USL clubs enter 2nd division to fulfill quotas, USL lower, USL1 , USL 2
4th division 64 clubs 6 promotion> amateur league ( club from province /state for USA) > lower USL 2, USL 3

The longest straight-line distance from west to east on the US mainland (contiguous 48 states) is 2,892 miles (4,654 km)
The longest north-to-south distance on the U.S. mainland (the contiguous 48 states) is approximately 1,650 miles (2,660 kilometers)

Indonesia spans approximately from west to east 5,370 kilometers (3,200 to 3,300 miles)
The longest distance from north to south in Indonesia is approximately 2,210 kilometers (1,373 miles)
* the data is vice versa cause we use metric but you guys use imperial lol

From west to east we even farther than USA 4654 km vs 5370 km, right now the club in our top division the farthest is Medan to Biak literally from far west to far east, there are no direct flight (if there is direct flight it will be around 6hours). So usually the schedule are set to be like a tour for this far away club, like 3 matches away for clubs in the areas , so from A to B to C to D, then back home. But the most important thing is each club play each other once home once away. So we know who the best club in the nation fully. I think nowadays AI can help to make this schedule easily to maximize this , maybe to get lower flight time or to lower flight cost. So club from west can go to mid > near east > far east > mid> home. 4 away matches straight

I think USA can become top nation like top 10 if they implement this (whole nation top league) and promotion relegation, basically more pro clubs, more youth developments more talent being produce. I think in terms of talent my country can have great talent players, but usually they dont have discipline in terms of nutrition, lifestyle , work etic, etc

USA can do 20 (top) ,30(2nd, 2 groups 15 each) and so on. I think minimal is 3 tier, the more tier of profesional club is better
If MLS can not merge with USL , then USL should take over and compete with MLS, add USL Premier above USL Championship as whole nation league in the future, as they already have USL championship, USL league 1 , league 2

*I checked wikipedia , they already planned USL premier in 2028 with 12 clubs as top division in the same level with MLS. If they apply promotion relegation this will be great. They should add top league member year by year until 18-20 clubs by more promotion less relegation. Then the same number for both until the number of clubs reached. And hopefully USL League 2 can be professional in the future

MLS will never be popular because the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc. aren't going to willingly cede their market share or TV revenue. It's the same problem in Australia.

Also, the best young athletes are funnelled into other sports. The problems are at the grassroots level. The other sports dominate culturally and financially.

For development and league model, J League actually a great one and with American school and college this is really applicable

Japanase school competitions is on another level. Not just for football, baseball too

And their school players go to college and play there too. If they deeemed good they can get pro contract (poached) by pro club in all tier in J League even abroad

I think USA should scrap that pay to play (i forgot the program name). And start to organize highscool, college level football by states then each state champion field nationwide like a World Cup model

I don't buy this one. There are over 300M people in the United States, let's say about 60M of them are under 18. Italy has about 9M people under the age of 18. If you were to take even proportions of kids playing every major sport, the US could easily field an elite league full of players as long as the youth programs are designed well. Even if the skew is more towards American football, baseball, and basketball, there are still plenty for the others. The United States manages to put out many elite hockey players even if it has a huge cost barrier, requires expensive equipment, and ice time is very expensive. The pool of players is way smaller than football has the potential of. Granted, the NHL is about 1/4 to 1/3 American, but if the MLS consisted of the elite level of American players that the NHL has, things would be much different.

The programs in the US take a game that should be cheap to play and make it into a upper middle to upper class sport. Football also has an advantage where a huge percentage of kids play it as one of their first sports. The problem is holding on to them and developing them.

I also take American football as a sport where skill development is able to occur at a much more rapid rate than other sports (way lower ceiling). So someone who is a natural freakish athlete that picks up the game in high school can still make the pros. I don't see that happening in other sports.
