Meanwhile, the Portugal parodies in-country continue ... this time with Zé Tuga (a joke on "Joe Portugal").

We truly only need two things to enjoy the World Cup: tremoços (lupini in Italy) and an imperial (short beer).

What's brilliant about it is that it is both a cultural insult (kinda a self-referential Portuguese n-word) and also something the locals love for its ridiculous parody of themselves. It's like "white trash", but "Tuga trash".

After 8 years here (and now citizenship!), I am truly becoming Portuguese to appreciate this in-jokes. :shifty:

Here is something I didn't know and it makes me feel better about my club in this difficult times.

The origin of the iconic Panini sticker logo is based on a real photograph.
The image features Carlo Parola, a legendary defender for Juventus.
The photo was taken during a match against Fiorentina in 1950. Parola was performing a defensive clearance with a bicycle kick, not attempting to score a goal, when photographer Corado Bianki captured this iconic moment.
The Panini brothers purchased the image and adapted it into the famous colorful illustration used on their sticker albums making it most recognised image in the world for every football fan.

Of course. I did get my citizenship finally (I pick up my national ID card tomorrow, which unlocks a lot of superpowers video-game-style). But the U.S. is one of six tax mafia countries in the world: i.e., "we don't care where you live, whatever you earn we own a piece of your ass".

There is a tax treaty between the US and PT to avoid double taxation. And at least for now, I actually have a slight advantage having my US-generated income from investments I still hold there to be taxed by US tax rates.

But the US is broke AF and will need to raise money eventually. Because they can't get the plebs to keep buying their ginormous Trump debt bonds without offering exorbitant interest rates to attract more filthy rich American buyers.

Lennart Karl starting for Germany in a friendly today only a few months after turning 18.

I don't know if that tells me more about Germany, or how special this kid could be.

It only matters in the context of whom you’re comparing them with. If you’re comparing the situation to, say, a nation like Shitaly, then it definitely tells you more about Germany than anything else.

I usually skim the front pages of news sites, and I just realized the World Cup starts in about nine days. This feels like the World Cup I care about the least in my entire life as a football fan. Italy being the biggest absentee is already enough to make me not want to watch it. On top of that, Iran have barely had any proper friendlies because of political issues, so they could easily go out early. Overall, I just don’t see any appeal in this tournament.

Who will be the "best breakout" player at the World Cup?

I'm hoping Yildiz can put on a show in Group D (USA, Paraguay, Australia, Turkiye) and really announce himself on the world stage. Not that I want him sold, fuck no. But it would make me happy to see him have a great tournament.

Should we have a poll for World Cup winner prediction?

Argies have a tricky path to the finals

If Argentina win their group, they play Uruguay in the round of 32(assuming they finish 2nd in their group)

You have teams like Spain, France, Germany and the Dutch on one side of the bracket

And Argentina, Portugal, Brazil & England on the other side

So a Spain-France final is unlikely if all the top seeds win their groups.

I give Argentina a good chance to make the final again if they dont fuck up their group. They avoid Spain and France on their side of the bracket which would be a huge plus for them.

Probably that Bayern kid. I hope you're right about Yildiz, I think he'll have another disappointing tournament where he doesn't do much of anything.

JJ have hyped him a bit too much most likely to make a huge plusvalenza but for me he's nowhere near as good as Güler for example.

Predict an average tournament from him

Forgot about Musiala. Could be a big tourney for him and Wirtz.
