I think it always was fucked, we're just seeing it live now.
It probably was. But there's no way it was fucked up like this before. In 10 years we're gonna eat lab meat, how is that not fucked up? Snowflakes mind animal cruelty and they have toxins on veggies and fruits, so we're eating literal shit. Was like this in the past? Nope.

I mean we had the black plague and way more diseases from meat in the past. A big reason why Jews and Muslims don’t eat pork or shellfish.

If we have to eat lab meat because of overpopulation, it’s the overpopulation that’s the problem. Not the animals.

So it’s a good thing birth rates are plummeting in advanced economies. Otherwise we have to do food gymnastics that will make us hate life.

I think most people eat way more meat than they are supposed to, and specially Americans. So I don’t think it’s an overpopulation problem, more than a culture/demand problem.

I personally have no problem with lab grown meat if it’s a more efficient and humane way of making protein that tastes as good or better than farmed meat. I also have no personal issues with eating meat the way it is now. I do try to get my shit from farms or ethically raised but that’s easier said than done. So I welcome any advances in food production.

I can't say I'm a black plague fan but it's not like there was nothing in-between those periods, though.
Of course not, but just an example to show that we’re at the peak of food safety.

Look up the book “The Jungle” on meat production in the not too distant past (early 20th century).

I don't think we're far from a point where we'll drink water (which will become rare) and have meds that will contain the nutrition values instead of regular meals. Like sci fi. But in the meantime we'll probably eat artificial everything.

I highly doubt we're overpopulated. We are not handling resources efficiently enough, though.

Depends by far I guess :D

And by part of the world. You can see it in the US with Midwest and west being more stringent. But here in the northeast, water is everywhere. It’s more likely we fuck up by over polluting it imo.

Oh it's exactly what I had in mind. I actually think we'll fuck that up quite soon. I mean, in plenty countries you don't have tap water. In some countries that's totally normal but I find it damn hard to digest. I don't think it will be many years when we all start buying water. Of course it will be more expensive too lol.

sometimes i hate capitalism and consumer societies

~end of june i went to a bike trip with a few buddies and i realized after not biking for like 30 years that it's actually fun lol. i just wanted a cheap simple bike to ride the nearby mountains. a simple cross country hardtail mtb. it should be easy, right? apparently it's not. i went down to this rabbit hole of specs, doubled, then tripled my original budget, then said to myself "you're nuts, just get something cheap to see how much you used the bike", then went to see a local dealer who knows all the buddies, got a list of good offers and after a few days of checking specs, comparing the shit out of the complete bike market, i settled with a specific bike. i told the local dealer that i want that model in that size, he said fine, he instantly called the wholesaler in front of me, reply: "the last item of that bike in that size just sold this morning". so i started to find either the same bike elsewhere, or find an other good bike with similar specs, because - listen to this lol - i didn't want to DOWNGRADE ON A BIKE I NEVER HAD lol. yeah i'm an idiot.

then i just found the same bike in germany at a great price. but they don't ship it to hungary. i asked all package forwarders i knew, but the package is either likely to be oversized, simply banned with them, or extremely expensive. so i'm now genuinely thinking about asking a buddy to come with me and drive to germany just to pick up a bike. yeah i'm an idiot, confirmed twice

:marc:
sorry for late reply, but did you consider buying used or is it not an option?

i absolutely did, but that's a typical used price of the bike i picked:
https://www.willhaben.at/iad/kaufen...procaliber-8-2025-rahmengroesse-m-l-968046587
hungarians also sell it around the same price on fb marketplace and local sites

and when that bloody german store finally confirms my order i placed last week, i'm buying it for 900 brand new. even considering diesel, austrian highway vignette and food for a day it would be cheaper than a used one. and in the meantime i can drop off my gf and son at wien for some sightseeing. i just need those freakin germans to confirm the order i placed last week lol, dunno what takes them this long

Been seeing this mentioned everywhere, so I looked it up. Is this the new Stanley mug? i.e. something that the mass consumers feel they need to own one of
Great comparison point, btw.

Just one more cultural turd being flung around now that I have to put up my umbrella for.

Yes and no. Overpopulated in terms of human settlements? No. Plenty of space. And 40% of our urban environments are dedicated to frigging cars and vehicles.

More to the point is a demand for animal meat. The tracts of land required to produce the amount of meat to meet demand is thinning now. With middle classes ballooning among the 2B people in Asia now, etc., there literally is not enough land on the planet to manage the livestock demand.

https://ourworldindata.org/agricultural-land-by-global-diets

Hence why people try to compensate for systemic limits by helping us eat the margarine of meat made in ag lab factories with much lower space requirements. To me, that's like solving the housing crisis by having us sleep in the drawers of Japanese pod farms.

ainring (so basically salzburg) is the store location, so we won't go deep into bavaria this time

yeah i checked ghosts and cubes too, as well as brands like specialized, giant (they have a factory in my hometown lol), radon, bmc and a few others, but this very trek stood out. this and the radon jealous are well equipped and light, and i'm familiar with trek geometry and sizes. an ml sized trek will be perfect and it also has a pretty good fork and brakes compared to the rest of the competition

btw speaking of german brands, cube is very popular here. yesterday we made a trip to a lake, plenty of bikers, cube was easily the most popular brand i could catch

do you ride a ghost?

Enjoy your trip I guess! You could add Salzburg to the sightseeing list as well then.

I don't own one yet, but I consider getting one.
